The Smith name comes from the occupation of blacksmith, metalsmith,
bladesmith, silversmith, goldsmith, and other workers in metal or ---
smiths".
The metalsmith worked with acquired skill to keep the metal from scorching or
burning. Rather, his goal was that the fashioned metal should shine ---
not burn. Thus, the motto for all smiths --- Luceo non uro: I Shine Not
Burn.
Sir William Smith (1854-1914 designed the Clan Smith tartan, Coat of Arms, and
Clan Badge. William Alexander Smith was the founder of the Boys Brigade,
the first uniformed organization for youth in the world. He was from
Thurso, Caithness, Scotland.
