This was our clan's 21st game at Glasgow, as we are
one of the founding clans there. This is a fun game and very
friendly game as the town of Glasgow, KY gets behind them
very well. There is lots of newspaper coverage and dignitaries
from Scotland each year. This year the honored chief was
Margaret Eliott of Redheugh, Chief of Clan Elliot. She and her
entourage walked around and greeted all the clan tents, which
was a thrill for me. She got the opportunity to learn a little
about our clan, which I'm sure she has never encountered
before.

This year's games' weather was very pleasant at about
80 degrees instead of the near 100 it sometimes gets. The
parade of tartans was down a bit, but I did march as the only
representative our clan. The music was great with Colin
Grant-Adams at his home game and performing in his usual
great manner. Seven Nations and Albannach provided the big
bang sound as they usually do.

I made some new friends and signed up new members
and welcomed them to our clan. One of our members was
there - Fran Lawson - has generously agreed to purchase a new
clan tent banner for the front of our tent. Thank you Fran!

Glasgow was once again a success for Clan Smith and
we look forward to coming back next year.

Several of the ladies of Clan Smith Society have asked if it would be possible to order polycotton material in the Clan Smith tartan for making dresses, skirts, arisaidhs, as well as for home decoration. We have been looking, and the best offer we have found thus far is from Peter Wilson, The Scottish Weaver, located in Charlotte, NC. He writes the following:

The minimum order quantity is 150 yards.  Price
    is $15.95 per yard.
For 200 yards - price $13.95 per yard
    For 300 yards - $11.95 per yard
    Over 500 yards - $9.95 per yard.

The fabric is woven 59/60" wide and is fully washable.

For shipping allow about 75-90 cents per yard.

I need a swatch sample so that I can have the colors matched as close to your requirements. You can al
so specify the size of the repeat if different from the swatch sample. The mill will make a small loom sample for approval. We have a $25.00 charge for this. After approval it usually takes about 6 weeks to weave.

There is a choice between the Ancient Smith and the Modern Smith. So far, most have voiced a preference for the Ancient Smith, but please let us know. Would Ancient Smith be what most of you would want?

Just let us know if you are interested in ordering some Smith tartan fabric and and we will see if there would be enough combined orders to make up his minimum order.

Greater Greenville Scottish Games and
Highland Festival

Clan Smith adds a new game to our circuit and
becomes one of the founding clans of yet another Scottish
Festival. Our other founding game being Glasgow, Ky.
Now 21 years old.*

Fellow Clan Smith members Debbie and Mike Clark
from Simpsonville, S.C. provided the funds for this new
game. They also lent a hand manning the tent which was a
big help to me and my wife, Marti. They were very
generous hosts as well as they gave us a place to bunk that
weekend.

The weekend started off with a parade on Friday
night in downtown Greenville which was very much
attended by other clans and lots of towns people. It seems
they hold a street festival on Fridays with lots of food and
other entertainment so we were able to fit into it and take
advantage of the festivities.

The actual games site was on Furman University
where they had plenty of room for all the activities. There
were many clans in attendance with more pipe bands than
you could count. Our clan had many people stopping by as
we made our presence known. The weather was hot but at
least it didn*t rain and it didn*t stop the crowds from
coming.

I hope this game continues to grow through the
years and will be a good venture for our clan as well.
Hopefully other clan members will now stop by next year
that may not have known about this game which will
further it along. See you all next year!

Well, if you came to our game for mud, you got it!
The rainy Friday made quite a mixture of gunk and mud
with pools of water to stand in all day. With the fortitude of
true Highlanders though, we fought through it and made the
25th game a complete success. As always, to lend their
support to Clan Smith's success were Newman Smith,
President of Clan Smith and his wife, Peggy Smith, clan
secretary. Many of our members were in attendance with us
to give us plenty of bodies to march at the Parade of Tartans
on Sunday, we were well represented. We picked up some
new members as well as current ones just renewing their dues
to keep us going. We sold some of our merchandise also to
help offset the expense of the game. In case any of our
members do not know it, we sell Clan Smith T-shirts as well as
a short story I wrote about a group of clan Blacksmiths in the
mid 1700's. Also we sell various tartans for framing in a
barnwood format and on mats mounted in plastic. We're
trying to branch out into other avenues to promote the clan.

Please try to make it next year to the Gatlinburg
Games and tell your friends. See you at the games!

Grandfather Mt. Games 2006

Grandfather came around fast again for the 2006
season. It*s the biggest game that we are represented at.
We had a good representation of members there as we
normally hold our annual meeting there. By the way, we
voted to move our annual meeting to Gatlinburg for the
2007 season and from now on. We feel that we now have
more members attending Gatlinburg than we do at
Grandfather. A lot of the old timers that made up the bulk
of our attendees, are unable to get out to come to
Grandfather. This makes us sad because we miss them and
only saw them at the Grandfather games once a year. We
notices that the crowds have been down the last two years
as we had more elbow room than in the past. The weather
was pleasant which always makes for a good time. Kearney
Smith, one of the professional Scottish athletes and member
of Clan Smith, won athlete of the day there!
Congratulations Kearney. Thanks also to our president
Newman Smith and secretary of Clan Smith, Peggy Smith
for their help at our tent and to my wife Marti for lending
a hand. Grandfather Mt. is a special place because of the
rich history of the area and for being in existence for 50
years as a Scottish game. It reminds so many of our Scottish
roots in Scotland with the natural terrain that is so much
like Scotland. Please try to come out next year and be a
part of this exceptional game locale!
